Jugendkunstschulen

Hi Everyone! Happy Saturday!

If you have an artistic kid, be sure to seek out the Jugendkunstschule in your neighborhood. They usually offer FREE or low cost art workshops in a variety of mediums, both after school and over the holidays. Some also offer family days on the weekends. They are funded by the Senate for Culture and Europe and there are 12 locations throughout Berlin. You can find out more about them (in German) on the Berlin.de website.

Some websites have their courses and summer program up-to-date, and others you would need to contact to see if there is something specific you can sign up for. The locations are in Mitte (one in Wedding, one on Auguststr.), Freidrichshain-Kreuzburg (Tempelhofer Ufer, with offerings in the first and 6th Summer holiday weeks, a free all-day multimedia program), Pankow (only their 3D printed jewelry workshop still has spots for the summer, but you can keep them in mind for the Fall as well), Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf (Mierendorff Insel, with a Käthe Kollwitz workshop in July), Spandau, Stieglitz, Tempelhof-Schöneberg, Neukölln, Treptow-Kopenick (Summer offers printmaking and sewing workshops,) Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Lichtenberg (Hohenschönhausen) (they are having a Summer Art Fest TODAY! 25. June, 15:00-19:00), and Reinickendorf (they are booked for the first week, but still have spots for the last week of summer holidays, with workshops in basket weaving and dance.)

Besides these 12 Jugendkunstschulen, there are often other small clubs that offer similar programming. For example, the Weinmeisterhaus in Mitte is offering three cool workshops this summer in Animation for ages 9+ on the 12th-14th of July from 10-15:00, A Dance and Choreography workshop for ages 8+ from the 19th-22nd of July 10-15:00, and a Graffiti Workshop for ages 10+ from the 16th-18th of August from 10-15:00. A lot of museums have drop-in arts programming too, like the Open Studio on Wednesday afternoons and the Material Bar on Sundays at the Berlinische Galerie Atelier der Bunter Jakob. Please send us a message if you know of other low-cost or free art workshops for kids.
